Introducing Afrinolly Shortfilm Competition


The Afrinolly Shortfilm Competition is a video‐based competition targeted at budding film, documentary and animation content creators. The competition is based on a  mobile app Afrinolly, the mobile phone app enables African Movies, Music and Entertainment enthusiasts to watch movie trailers, music videos, comedy & full-length movies that have been made public by content owners or their legal representative.

Currently,Afrinolly has 1.3m downloads.The winners will share $100,000 (in cash and prizes).



 The goal of this competition is to:
  1. Showcase African talent online especially the numerous
  2.  film-school graduates and the fast growing YouTube taught indies
  3. Provide a platform to foster the creation of new (online)
  4.  content   produced   by   Africans,   thereby   boosting   local content
  5. Provide great visibility for some of the most gifted creators around the continent
 The timetable is as follows:
  • Opening - 1st November 
  • Online Submission of Entries (3 months) -1st November  –  31st January 2013
  •  Publicity & African Film Schools  Visitation- 7th – 30th November
  •  International Judges Shortlist of Finalists - 1st  – 8th February  2013
  • Online Public Voting -11th February  - 4th March 2013 
  •  Online Final Result- 6th March 2013

Recap: Egerton University Google Map Maker and G+ Training

Egerton University Google Student Ambassadors(GSA) conducted a Google Map Maker and Google+ Training at the Computer Science Lab 2 on 20th Oct 2012.
The event was attended by 80+ students and staff members from different departments and faculties.

David Mabiria, leader of Egerton Linux User Group, gave a brief overview of the day's activities and introduced the EUCOSSA Chairman, Laban Ndwaru who in turn introduced the ambassadors.

Moffat Ngacha, Lead GSA for Egerton University, kick-started the event by providing an brief overview on Google and the GSA Program.

Elias Tenai, GSA for Egerton University, started with a demo on Gmail. He taught the attendees on how to create a gmail account(for those who didn't have), how to get the most out of your email, using filters and labels to manage emails, creating an email signature and much more.

Kevin Otiego, a Google Map Maker Advocate conducted the Mapmaker training. He showed attendees what mapmaker is, how to create and edit maps, mapping the different categories such as roads, buildings,a and much more. Later on, he covered fusion tables among others.

Moffat, then took on the Google+ training. He explained the different ways of using G+, both educational as well as fun ways. The students were amused with G+ sms where you can post to G+ without any data connection. He also showed them how to conduct a G+ hangout and broadcast it on air.

During Q&A session, the students were given some cool Google swag, while having some refreshments.

Meanwhile, the #gsassakenya was trending all day :-)

Google Map Maker and Google+ Training event


Egerton Google Student Ambassadors(GSAs) invites you to an event on Google Map Maker and Google+ on 20th October 2012, in Computer Science Lab, from 9am-3pm.
Google Map Maker is a tool used for editing and creating Google maps. It helps you to contribute to the global maps where you can map your University, community, home area, and much more.
In addition to this, we will also be conducting a Google+ Training.
What's G+? It a new social networking tool that allows you to socialize and interact with people in a much more fun way, yet educational too.

Google Kenya Developer Week is here


Google Kenya Developer Week is here, similar to g|Kenya 2.0 (for those who attended last year).
On the 7th of November 2012 , Google Kenya will be holding a special developer event built around the theme: “Google Kenya: Building for Vision 2030” .
Google Engineers and Developer Advocates will be on hand to take attendees through the basic and advanced aspects of designing and building scalable software solutions in line with the vision.
There will also be a keynote address by the representative from the Ministry of State for Planning, National Development & Vision 2030.
Content:
The session will include presentations, workshops and codelabs on the following:

  • Designing for an improved user experience 
  • Building scalable backends for mobile
  • Adaptive mobile frontend design

The event will be by invitation only and will have developers from all over Kenya.

Google Student Ambassadors at Egerton University.


The first group of Google Student Ambassadors at Egerton University.
Moffat Ngacha (Computer Science,Y4) and Elias Tenai (Computer Science,Y4) were selected as Google Student Ambassadors for Egerton University.

The Google Student Ambassador (GSA) Program is an opportunity for students to act as liaisons between Google and their universities.
The ambassadors:
·         Learn about innovative Google products and programs.
·         Plan and host fun and educational events on campus.
·         Teach students how to use Google tools such as Google Apps for Education and Google Search for Educators.
·         Help universities “Go Google” and bring their university community online.
·         Act as a campus contact for Google teams.
·         Introduce peers to Google opportunities, internships and competitions.
·         Introduce students to new Google products and features, among others.
The two attended a Google Student Ambassador summit from 10th-14th June 2012 in Nairobi, together with 145 others representing 103 universities from 13 different countries in Sub Saharan Africa.
